In this week’s installment of ‘How to Be the Lowest Common Denominator’, various emergency call centers across the US are being targeted by TDoS(Telephony Denial of Service) attacks according to both the Department of Homeland Security(DHS) & the FBI.
Ambulance and Hospital lines receive calls from an entity claiming to represent payday loan collections. Those who have directly received these calls claim the person on the line had a heavy accent. They ask to speak with either a current or former employee, demanding payment of $5,000 as a result of a defaulted loan. Should the target fail to provide the amount demanded, the attacker launches to TDoS. From this point forward, the target organization becomes bombarded with a continuous stream of calls for an unspecified amount of time. Phone service is disrupted, with the traffic actually preventing both incoming and outgoing calls.
As of the time of this writing, emergency service 911 lines have fortunately not been affected. The attacks so far have been detrimental enough to force roll-over calls to alternate facilities, according to the DHS & FBI. This, of course, is not the first time that TDoS attacks have been employed. Last year in the United Kingdom, two teenage boys were arrested in conjunction with a series of TDoS attacks and prank calls against the Anti-Terrorist Hotline, and a 911 call center in Louisiana was targeted by a similar extortion ploy as well.
So, to those responsible for the targeting of emergency services– congratulations! You are the lowest common denominator this week. Take solace in the depravity of your actions, and realize that without your actions placing you so low on the evolutionary scale, we wouldn’t have articles to write.
